Rooted in Grace — When Nothing Looks Like It’s Growing
There are seasons in life when things feel steady.
When faith feels natural.
When trusting God doesn’t feel complicated.
When His presence feels easy to recognize.
And then there are seasons when it doesn’t.
Seasons that feel quiet.
Slow.
Unseen.
Seasons where nothing looks wrong…
But nothing looks like it’s working either.
You’re showing up.
You’re doing what you know to do.
You’re being faithful in the small things.
And still—
Nothing seems to be changing.
I’ve found myself in those kinds of seasons too.
And if I’m honest, the questions that rise in those moments are subtle—but persistent:
“Shouldn’t I be further by now?”
“Is God doing anything?”
“Am I wasting my time?”
Because when we can’t see growth,
it’s easy to assume there isn’t any.
But recently, the Lord began to gently shift my perspective.
Not by changing my circumstances—
But by showing me something deeper.
That maybe the problem isn’t that nothing is happening.
Maybe it’s that I can’t see what is.
Roots Grow First
If you look at a healthy tree, what you see above ground is only part of the story.
The branches.
The leaves.
The fruit.
But what gives that tree strength—
what allows it to stand through storms—
is not what’s visible.
It’s the roots.
Roots grow downward
before anything grows outward.
And Scripture reflects this pattern.
Psalm 1 tells us that the righteous are like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding fruit in season.
In season.
Fruit has timing.
Roots have priority.
Colossians tells us we are rooted and built up in Him.
Rooted first.
Built up second.
God often deepens
before He displays.
And deepening happens underground.
So what if the lack of visible fruit
is not a sign that nothing is happening?
What if it’s a sign that something deeper is?
The Quiet Weight of Invisible Seasons
Invisible seasons don’t demand attention the way fire seasons do.
They don’t feel urgent.
They don’t feel dramatic.
But they can feel just as heavy.
Because they whisper discouragement.
They make you question your progress.
Your purpose.
Even your faith.
You begin to look for evidence.
Evidence that your effort matters.
Evidence that God is moving.
Evidence that growth is happening.
And when you don’t see it, doubt starts to creep in.
But invisible seasons are not empty.
They are foundational.
You Were Never Meant to Grow Alone
There’s something fascinating about how trees grow in certain forests.
Their roots don’t grow deep individually.
They grow outward—
intertwining with the trees around them.
Holding each other up underground.
That’s how they withstand storms.
Not alone.
But connected.
Invisible seasons tempt us to isolate.
When you don’t feel seen, you withdraw.
When you don’t feel affirmed, you pull back.
But Scripture reminds us not to give up meeting together—
to encourage one another.
Because sometimes you cannot see your own growth.
You need someone else to remind you:
“I see your faithfulness.”
“I see your consistency.”
“I see you not quitting.”
You were never meant to withstand this season alone.
Treasure in the Darkness
There is a verse that has steadied me in hidden seasons.
In Isaiah, God says:
“I will give you treasures in the darkness, riches stored in secret places…”
Treasures.
In the dark.
It feels backwards.
We assume treasure lives in visible seasons.
In breakthrough moments.
In success we can point to.
But Scripture tells us something different.
There are riches stored in hidden places.
And maybe that’s why invisible seasons matter.
Because when nothing looks impressive…
when nothing feels noteworthy…
God is doing a quiet work within you.
Forming depth.
Shaping humility.
Building endurance.
Creating intimacy with Him.
Some treasures cannot be formed in the spotlight.
They are developed in secret.
So what if this season isn’t empty?
What if it’s a vault?
Buried Is Not Abandoned
Invisible seasons often bring comparison to the surface.
Others seem to be flourishing.
Moving forward.
Seeing results.
And you feel buried.
But buried is not abandoned.
A seed splits before it sprouts.
Breaking happens underground.
What looks like nothing
is often the beginning of everything.
We tend to measure growth by what we can see.
But Scripture reminds us that outwardly we may feel weary—
while inwardly, we are being renewed day by day.
Day by day.
Quietly.
Steadily.
Faithfully.
Sometimes the only evidence of growth
is endurance.
You’re still showing up.
Still praying.
Still choosing obedience.
That is growth.
Even if no one sees it.
The Pattern of Hiddenness
This is not a random pattern.
We see it throughout Scripture.
Moses spent forty years hidden before leading.
David was anointed king, then sent back to the fields.
Jesus lived thirty years unseen before three years of public ministry.
Thirty hidden.
Three visible.
God is not rushed.
He is intentional.
He is more concerned with who you are becoming
than what you are accomplishing.
And invisible seasons are where that becoming happens.
Staying Planted
If I’m honest, this is the part that feels hardest.
Staying.
When nothing feels like it’s changing.
When growth feels slow.
When you’re tempted to look for something else.
But Psalm 92 tells us that flourishing comes from being planted.
Depth requires staying.
Roots don’t grow in constant movement.
They grow in consistency.
In returning.
In showing up.
In choosing faithfulness again and again.
Even when it feels small.
Even when it feels unnoticed.
Because growth in these seasons is layered.
Not dramatic.
But steady.
The Invitation: You Are Being Rooted
So let me ask you gently:
Where does your life feel invisible right now?
Where are you showing up faithfully…
but wondering if it matters?
Where are you tempted to quit
because you don’t see results?
What if this season is not evidence that God is absent—
But evidence that He is working in ways you cannot yet see?
You are not behind.
You are not forgotten.
You are not failing.
You are being rooted.
There is growth in this soil.
There is treasure in this place.
There is renewal happening day by day.
And what is being built beneath the surface
will one day sustain what grows above it.
Stay planted.
Stay steady.
You are being strengthened
in ways that will last.
