How to Trust God in Hard Seasons When Life Doesn’t Make Sense

Introduction: When Life Doesn’t Feel Good

What do you do when life doesn’t turn out the way you prayed it would?

When the outcome you hoped for… doesn’t come?
When the story feels unfinished, confusing, or painfully hard?

We often hear phrases like “God works all things for good”—but if we’re honest, there are moments when that doesn’t feel true.

Because some things don’t feel good.

And yet, this is exactly where an eternal mindset begins to shift everything.

Not by denying the pain.
Not by pretending it makes sense.

But by anchoring your heart in something deeper than what you can see.

What Is an Eternal Mindset?

Living with an eternal mindset means remembering:

This life is not the full story.

It’s not the final chapter.
It’s not the ending.

It’s a part of something much bigger—something God is writing with intention, purpose, and ultimate good in mind.

And when you begin to see your life through that lens…
you start to notice something else:

You are layered in grace.

Not just at salvation.
But in every single moment of your life.

The Foundation: Why This Is Even Possible

Before we can live this way, we have to go back to the beginning.

  • Sin created separation
  • God set a redemption plan in motion
  • Jesus went to the cross
  • He rose again
  • And death was defeated

This means something profound for you:

You are not standing before God based on your performance.
You are standing before Him covered in the righteousness of Jesus.

You are called beloved.

There is no sin—past or future—that makes God regret choosing you.

As Matt Chandler says, “Jesus knew what He was buying on the cross.”

You cannot out-sin His grace.

You Are Covered in Grace (Right Now)

This truth changes everything.

Because grace is not just what saved you—
it’s what sustains you.

It’s the covering over:

  • Your ordinary Tuesday
  • Your overwhelming season
  • Your grief
  • Your questions
  • Your failures

There is grace to:

  • Let go of shame
  • Forgive as you’ve been forgiven
  • Show kindness
  • Release control

Your life is no longer your own.

And while that might sound like loss…
it is actually where freedom begins.

You Are Filled With Resurrection Power

Here’s the second truth that transforms how you live:

The same power that raised Jesus from the dead…
is alive in you.

That means you are not powerless in your pain.

You have access to strength beyond your own.

But it’s important to understand this:

Overcoming does not always look like the outcome you hoped for.

When the Outcome Isn’t What You Prayed For

One of the hardest tensions to hold is this:

You can deeply trust God…
and still not get the outcome you wanted.

In this episode, Bryson shares about her sister Beth’s 9-year battle with cancer.

The outcome everyone prayed for didn’t happen.

But that doesn’t mean the story ended in defeat.

Because the victory was never the absence of suffering—
it was the presence of Jesus through it.

The battle was not cancer.
The battle was staying daily in His grace.

And through that lens, Beth didn’t lose—
she overcame.

The Pearl Is Not the Outcome

We often chase outcomes:

Healing
Answers
Resolution
Clarity

But what if the true treasure isn’t what God gives…
but Who we receive?

The pearl is not the outcome.
The pearl is Jesus.

Resurrection power doesn’t guarantee the life you imagined.

It draws you into deeper dependence on Him.

And that… is where real transformation happens.

“It Doesn’t Have to Feel Good…”

There’s a phrase in this episode that may feel hard to sit with:

“It doesn’t have to feel good for me to believe it is good.”

Because sometimes:

  • It doesn’t make sense
  • It doesn’t feel fair
  • It doesn’t feel redeemable

But an eternal mindset allows you to hold both:

Deep hurt
and
Deep trust

At the same time.

Not because you understand the story—
but because you trust the One writing it.

Lift Your Eyes (Isaiah 40:26)

In hard seasons, our natural tendency is to look inward.

At what we’ve lost.
What we wish was different.
What we don’t understand.

But Scripture gently calls us to do something different:

“Lift up your eyes…”

The God who:

  • Calls the stars by name
  • Holds them in place by His power

Is the same God holding you.

This truth both humbles and comforts us.

He is God.
We are not.

And yet—He cares deeply for every detail of our lives.

Your Story Is Not Over

One day:

  • Death will be no more
  • Tears will be wiped away
  • Every hard chapter will be redeemed

Until then, we live in the tension.

We carry grief…
while holding onto hope.

We ask questions…
while choosing to trust.

We walk through pain…
while being covered in grace.

Because this is not the end of the story.

How to Live This Out (Practically)

If you’re in a hard season right now, start here:

1. Lift Your Eyes Daily

When your thoughts spiral inward, gently redirect your focus upward.

2. Release What You Can’t Control

You don’t have to carry what only God can hold.

3. Replace Shame with Truth

You are not who your past says you are—you are who God says you are.

4. Draw on His Strength

When you feel weak, don’t withdraw—lean in.

Final Encouragement

Living with an eternal mindset is not about pretending things don’t hurt.

It’s about remembering:

  • You are covered in grace
  • You are filled with resurrection power
  • You are held by the God who holds the stars

And even when you can’t see it yet—

The story is not over until it is fully and eternally good.
