“Fire: When The Heat Isn’t The End”

April 12, 2026

Purpose in the Fire

There are seasons in life when things feel manageable.

When faith feels steady.
When trusting God feels simple.
When His presence feels easy to recognize.

And then there are seasons when it doesn’t.

Seasons that feel intense.
Overwhelming.
Unexplainably heavy.

Seasons where it’s not just something lingering…

It feels like fire.

I’ve found myself in those kinds of seasons too.

And if I’m honest, the question that rises quickly in those moments is:

“Lord, why is this happening?”

Or even more quietly…

“Where are You?”

Because when life feels this hard, it’s easy to assume something has gone wrong.

But recently, the Lord began to gently shift my perspective.

Not by taking me out of the fire—

But by showing me something deeper.

That maybe the fire is not always punishment.

Maybe it’s formation.

The Fire That Opens

There’s a species of pine tree whose cones stay sealed shut for years.

Closed.
Holding what’s inside.

Until heat comes.

Intense heat melts the resin.
The cone opens.
And the seeds are released.

What’s fascinating is this:

The fire doesn’t destroy the tree’s future.

It unlocks it.

And I can’t help but wonder how many of us are walking through seasons right now that feel like that.

Not mild discomfort.
Not a small irritation.

But pressure.
Heat.
Intensity.

The kind that changes you.

And our instinct in those moments is to pray:

“Lord, take me out of this.”

But what if the fire is not ruining you?

What if it’s opening you?

When Obedience Leads to Fire

In Daniel 3, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are thrown into the furnace.

Not because they failed.

Because they were faithful.

That alone challenges so much of what we believe.

We often assume:

Obedience leads to ease.
Faithfulness leads to comfort.

But Scripture shows us something different.

Sometimes obedience leads you into the fire.

And yet, when the king looks in, he doesn’t see three men being consumed.

He sees four men walking.

Walking.

Not frantic.
Not undone.

And the fourth looks like the Son of God.

They were not spared from the fire.

They were met in it.

What the Fire Burns Away

There is one detail in that story that moves me every time.

When they were thrown into the furnace, they were bound.

But when they walked in the fire…

They were free.

The fire didn’t burn them.

It burned what held them.

And that changes everything.

Because maybe the fire is not here to destroy you.

Maybe it’s here to loosen what has been holding you.

False expectations.
False control.
False security.
Things we didn’t even realize we were clinging to.

The fire is not random.

It is refining.

Grief in the Fire

Fire seasons almost always carry grief.

And grief doesn’t show up in just one way.

There is sadness.

“I miss what was.”

And there is anger.

“This is not how it was supposed to be.”

Most of us are more comfortable with one than the other.

But Scripture makes space for both.

The Psalms are filled with honest cries.
Job brought his questions directly to God.
Even Jesus expressed deep anguish.

This is not weak faith.

It is honest faith.

God is not afraid of your questions.

He just wants you to bring them to Him.

Not polished.
Not filtered.

Just real.

Because healing doesn’t begin in pretending.

It begins in presence.

When the Fire Touches Relationships

Fire doesn’t just test individuals.

It tests relationships.

Especially marriage.

Two people can walk through the same situation
and experience it completely differently.

One leans toward sadness.
The other toward anger.

One withdraws.
The other pursues.

And suddenly, what once felt unified begins to feel strained.

But often, those responses are not attacks.

They are protection.

And in those moments, grace has to be layered intentionally.

Choosing to listen instead of assume.
Choosing vulnerability instead of accusation.
Choosing to say:

“I feel overwhelmed.”
“I feel scared.”
“I feel alone.”

And underneath it all, there is a deeper question:

Am I expecting my spouse to carry what only Christ can carry?

Because when we place that weight on people, the fire intensifies.

But when we place it on God, something softens.

Reframing the Fire

What if the fire is not ruining you?

What if it is opening you?

Opening humility.
Opening compassion.
Opening dependence.
Opening an eternal perspective.

I watched this so clearly in my sister Beth’s life.

As her physical condition grew harder…
her dependence on the Lord grew deeper.

Her faith didn’t shrink in the fire.

It expanded.

She once wrote about experiencing a kind of joy in that season
that didn’t make sense from the outside.

A joy that came not from circumstances—

But from the nearness of God.

And that perspective stays with me.

Because it reminds me:

The fire may not look good.

But God is still good in it.

The Goal Is Not Escape

Everything in us wants out of the fire.

Relief feels like the goal.

But Scripture gently shifts that perspective.

The goal is not escape.

It’s presence.

Jesus said:

“In this world you will have trouble.”

Not might.

Will.

But He didn’t stop there.

“Take heart. I have overcome the world.”

The promise is not that we will avoid hard things.

It’s that we will not face them alone.

Staying in the Fire with Him

Fire doesn’t always end quickly.

And that’s the part we don’t like.

But what if the invitation is not to rush out of it…

But to walk with Him through it?

To trust that even when we don’t understand
something is being formed.

Something is being loosened.
Something is being opened.

You are not being consumed.

You are being refined.

Held.
Seen.
Met.

Even here.

The Invitation: You Are Not Alone in the Fire

So let me ask you gently:

Where does your life feel like fire right now?

Where have you been asking God to remove something
instead of recognizing that He is with you in it?

What if the intensity you feel
is not evidence that He has left—

But evidence that He is closer than you realize?

You are not forgotten.

You are not abandoned.

You are not being destroyed.

You are being formed.

And even in the fire—

You are not alone.
