“Living With An Eternal Mindset”

Faith, Grief & Finding Purpose in Everyday Life

There are moments in life that feel ordinary.

Driving in the car.
Folding laundry.
Having everyday conversations.

Moments that seem small.
Routine.
Almost forgettable.

And then there are moments that shift everything.

Moments that change how you see life…
how you think…
how you understand what really matters.

When Grief Changes Your Perspective

After my sister Beth passed away, something unexpected happened in my heart.

My thoughts became consumed with eternity in a way they never had before.

I would find myself sitting in traffic and thinking:

Beth will never sit in traffic again.

Thinking about hard days in her body—and realizing:

She will never have another one.

Thinking about the pain she carried for so many years—and knowing:

She is fully whole now.

That perspective didn’t take away my grief.

But it gave my grief somewhere to land.

Why an Eternal Mindset Changes Everything

In this week’s episode of Honey For Your Heart, I’m sharing what it means to live with an eternal mindset—especially in seasons of grief, uncertainty, and everyday life.

Because an eternal mindset is not just something we think about at the end of life.

It reshapes how we live today.

Scripture tells us to fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen—because what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18).

Eternity doesn’t make today less important.

It makes today sacred.

It reminds us that:

  • our daily lives have purpose
  • our ordinary moments matter
  • and God is working in ways we may not yet see

The Power of a Daily Yes

One of the most powerful things I witnessed in Beth’s life was not a single, heroic moment of faith at the end.

It was a daily yes.

A yes on ordinary days.
A yes on hard days.
A yes on “couch days.”
A yes on “green pasture days.”

That daily surrender—again and again—is what shaped her life.

And it’s what prepared her for the moments she could not have anticipated.

We often think faith is built in big moments.

But it’s not.

It’s built quietly, over time, in the unseen decisions to trust God in everyday life.

“Lord, Help Me See What Is Unseen”

Living with an eternal mindset begins with a simple prayer:

“Lord, help me see what is unseen.”

Because what we see is rarely the full picture.

So often we respond based on what is right in front of us—
the frustration,
the tension,
the uncertainty.

But beneath the surface, God is always at work.

When we begin to ask Him to show us what is unseen:

  • we respond differently
  • we listen more carefully
  • we move with greater patience and intention

Even in our hardest moments.

Finding Purpose in Hard Seasons

An eternal mindset doesn’t remove suffering.

But it changes how we walk through it.

Instead of asking:

“How do I get out of this?”
we begin to ask:

“How do I steward this well?”

That shift is not always easy.

If I’m honest, my instinct is often to fix or escape hard things as quickly as possible.

But God is often doing a deeper work:

  • growing trust
  • building dependence
  • shaping our hearts in ways comfort never could

Even in the hard, there is purpose.

Your Life Is Always Speaking

An eternal perspective also reminds us of something we often forget:

Our lives are always speaking.

Not just through our words—
but through our actions.

The way we respond to stress.
The way we walk through difficulty.
The way we trust when life doesn’t make sense.

People are watching.

Our children.
Our families.
Our friends.

We may not have a platform.

But we always have a witness.

Life Is Short—But Deeply Meaningful

Living with an eternal mindset brings clarity to something else:

Life is short.

Beth lived 42 years.
My mom lived 47.

And yet both lives made lasting, eternal impact.

Even a long life is short in light of eternity.

But that doesn’t make it small.

It makes it significant.

It invites us to ask:

  • Am I investing in what is eternal?
  • Am I living with intention?
  • Am I seeing my everyday life as meaningful?

Because we only get so many days.

And each one matters.

Preparing Now for What Matters Most

One of the most humbling things about Beth’s life is that she was prepared for her hardest days because of how she lived her ordinary ones.

She filled her mind with truth.
She surrounded herself with worship.
She anchored her heart in God’s Word.

So when the hardest moments came, those rhythms were already in place.

And it leaves me asking:

Am I preparing now for what I will need later?

Because we don’t have to wait for a crisis to begin living this way.

We can begin today.

A Final Encouragement

If you find yourself in a hard season right now—or simply in the middle of a full and busy life—I want to remind you:

This moment is not the whole story.

There is more happening than what you can see.

God is at work:

  • beneath the surface
  • within your circumstances
  • within your heart

And sometimes the most powerful response is simply:

“Yes, Lord.”

Again and again.
