“You Can’t Rely on Old Manna”

March 29, 2026

There are seasons in life when faith feels easy.

When Scripture feels alive.
When prayer comes naturally.
When trusting God doesn’t feel like a struggle.

And then there are seasons when it doesn’t.

Seasons that feel heavy.
Uncertain.
Disorienting.

Seasons where opening your Bible feels hard…
and even knowing where to begin feels overwhelming.

I found myself in one of those seasons recently.

And in the middle of it, I kept coming back to one simple, but deeply confronting question:

Do I really trust God?
Do I believe He is who He says He is—even here?

Around that same time, I heard a phrase that has stayed with me:

You can’t live on old manna.

It stopped me.

Because if I’m honest, I think I had been trying to.

In this week’s episode of Honey For Your Heart, I’m sharing what that means—what manna represents, why it matters, and how God uses daily provision to form something deeper in us.

Because this isn’t just a truth for hard seasons.

It’s a truth for everyday life.

What Manna Teaches Us About Trust

In Exodus 16, God provides manna for the Israelites as they walk through the wilderness.

They were tired.
They were hungry.
They didn’t know what was ahead.

And God provided food for them—daily.

But it came with very specific instructions.

They could only gather enough for that day.
If they tried to store it up, it spoiled.

God wasn’t being restrictive.

He was being intentional.

He was teaching them to trust Him—not once, but daily.

To depend on Him—not occasionally, but continually.

And the same invitation is extended to us.

The Problem with Old Manna

So often, we try to live on what God did in the past.

We remember seasons where faith felt strong.
Where truth felt clear.
Where God felt near.

And those seasons matter.

God met us there.

But that manna was given for that day—not this one.

Yesterday’s nourishment cannot sustain today’s need.

And I felt that in a very real way.

During Beth’s illness, I realized something about my own faith.

I knew Scripture.
I could recall truth.

But my soul was not being nourished by memory.

I needed fresh manna.

So I made the choice—sometimes through tears—to open the Word again.

Not because it felt easy.
Not because I felt strong.

But because I knew I needed to be fed.

And that changed everything.

Daily Manna Is a Daily Return

Daily dependence doesn’t come from remembering truth.

It comes from returning to it.

Again and again.

Opening Scripture—even when it feels dry.
Sitting in God’s presence—even when it feels quiet.
Holding onto one truth—even when everything else feels uncertain.

Sometimes faith doesn’t look like strength.

Sometimes it looks like showing up.

And that counts.

Because God meets us there.

Every time.

You Have What You Need for Today

One of the most grounding truths I’ve held onto is this:

We have what we need for today.

And we will have what we need for tomorrow—when we get there.

So often, our anxiety comes from trying to carry more than today.

We want answers for the future.
Clarity for what’s ahead.
Strength for things we haven’t even faced yet.

But God’s provision doesn’t work that way.

He meets us daily.

Not all at once.

Just enough for today.

And that is not limiting.

It’s freeing.

God Is Working While You Rest

One detail about manna has stayed with me in a powerful way.

It came with the morning dew.

Which means it arrived while the Israelites were sleeping.

They weren’t striving.
They weren’t working for it.
They were resting.

And God was providing.

That truth has been such a reminder for me.

God is working—even when I’m not.

Even when I don’t see it.
Even when I don’t feel it.

He is still providing.

When Provision Looks Different

There is a moment later in Scripture where the manna stops.

Not because God stopped providing—
but because His provision changed.

The people had entered a new season.

The Promised Land.

And now, instead of manna falling from heaven, they would eat from the land God had given them.

This wasn’t abandonment.

It was transition.

And I think so many of us find ourselves here at times.

Where God’s provision looks different than it once did.
Where faith feels unfamiliar.
Where what once felt obvious now feels quieter.

But that doesn’t mean God has left.

It may simply mean He is leading us into something new.

The same God who provided then
is the God providing now.

The Invitation: Come Back Again

At its core, this message is simple:

Come back.

Not to strive.
Not to perform.
Not to prove anything.

But to receive.

To open the Word again.
To sit with Him again.
To ask:

“Lord, give me what I need for today.”

Because He will.

He always does.
